Monitoring Nantucket Pond Conditions

We have created a Nantucket Pond Water Guide. It describes many of the possible conditions that you may encounter while observing a pond and can be a helpful resource when filling out the pond reporting tool below.

Adopt a Pond Program

Have you observed any signs of potential unhealthy ponds on Nantucket and want to report your observations? Submit them below with what you saw (possible algal bloom, oil sheen, overgrown aquatic vegetation, etc.) and where you were. We will monitor submissions and direct them to the appropriate landowner to respond. Help us expand our capacity to monitor all waterways on Nantucket by “Adopting a Pond.” Algae are a natural component of aquatic environments, but when they grow rapidly to excess, problems arise. Changes in pond water conditions raise concern but do not always mean the water is polluted or unhealthy.  By “Adopting a Pond,” you can help us monitor water conditions by using our Pond Conditions Guide and Reporting Tool to provide more information on ponds on Nantucket. Please contact Thaïs M. Fournier at tfournier@nantucket-ma.gov for more information on volunteering to monitor our ponds.
